Parent's Guide

The education of your child is the most important responsibility of our school staff. In support of this goal, the Danube staff, School Based Management Council has established discipline rules and procedures which are subject to yearly review. We realize that in order for any policy to be successful, parents, students and school staff must work together as a team. We ask that you please review and discuss each of the following rules with your child.

BICYCLE SAFETY PRACTICES

Only students in the third grade or above may ride bicycles to school. If your child wishes to ride his or her bicycle, the bicycle must be licensed and a permit must be on file in the school office.

In summary, if your child is in grades 3 through 5 and you wish him/her to ride a bicycle to school, he/she must observe the following:

1.   Have a city license issued by the Police Department.

2.  Have a new Bicycle Registration Card on file at school each year.

3.   Lock his/her bicycle (no double locking with a friend).

4.   Know and obey safety rules.

PERSONAL PROPERTY OF STUDENTS

The Los Angeles Unifies School District does not provide insurance for loss of or damage to personal property of students. School administrators and principals are urged to notify parents and students that there is no insurance coverage and to discourage bringing personal property to school, particularly large sums of money or expensive clothing, jewelry, and watches. Valuables should NOT be left in desks.

Please do not allow your children to bring cameras, toys, watches, calculators, electronic games, etc., unless prior written approval is given by the principal. We cannot assume responsibility for such items. Please mark your child's name with a permanent marker on all clothing, lunch pails, backpacks, etc. We will check labeling on these items periodically to help insure that clothing and personal items are not lost. There is a Lost and Found area for students to check for lost articles.

EARLY DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL

If you wish your child released before regular dismissal time, please send a note to school in advance and pick up your child in the school front office. For safety reasons we cannot release a child to leave the grounds alone. We request that you plan to meet him/her in the school office. For security purposes our gates are locked during the school day. Be sure to list all persons who may pick up your child on the Emergency Card.

CANDY AND GUM

Please do not allow children to bring candy or gum to school. We have had problems with these items on the school grounds. We do not allow candy or gum from a health standpoint and a litter standpoint.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Please emphasize the fact that children are to walk in as safe a manner as possible to school. Emphasize crossing streets only at crosswalks and obeying the signals and stop signs.

SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUPS

We have 3 major opportunities for parents to participate in school activities. Danube's PTA is a member of the 31st District and holds an annual membership drive as well as other fundraising and educational activities. Secondly Danube has a Parent Center who provides opportunities for major fundraising activities throughout the school yearLastly we have a School Based Management Council. All members of our community are invited to attend these monthly meetings to keep abreast of school concerns and to help us to plan school programs. We urge you to participate in all of our parent activities.

VOLUNTEERS

We hope many of our parents will become involved in our school through the Volunteer Program. Please talk to your child's teacher regarding volunteer opportunities in the classroom. Parents can also volunteer through the Parent Center.

SCHOOL VISITATION

It is important that all visitors be made aware of and adhere to Board Rules 1265 and 2002 which in effect, provides that the presence on school campus of any parent, community person, organization representative(s), concerned groups, or other individuals or groups, regardless of affiliation, requires the principal's consent and approval. Pupils, school personnel, classrooms, special programs, or other activities, regardless of their funding source, are not subject to visitation, observation of any other external attention without the school administrator's endorsement. Visitors who defy the school administrator authority can be reported to the appropriate police agencies and may be subject to criminal charges under California Penal Code Sections 626-6, 626-8, or Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 63.94. In order to provide for the utmost safety of our students all school gates will be locked daily at 8:15 a.m. and will not be unlocked until 2:43 p.m.

All persons entering the campus after 8:15 a.m. must check in through the main office, sign in and receive either a Volunteer Badge or a Visitor Badge in order to access the campus. This district policy is to ensure the safety of all our students.
